How to make friends when traveling solo

Updated: Mar 17, 2019

Travelling alone is an amazing experience, but before you set off you may find yourself asking question like "How will I make friends". Fact of the matter is once you set off you will find yourself meeting all kinds of new people and making all sorts of new friends. But to help you ease your mind we've put together a 'how to' on making friends when travelling!

Our first recommendation is staying in Hostel Dorms, this is hands down the easiest way to meet new friends. Private rooms may be more comfy but dorms are where are the action is at! From here you will find yourself exploring with your new friends, your first stop will probably be the hostel bar, which leads to our second point! The hostel bar will help bring some liquid courage to the equation and you will quickly find yourself talking to new people and playing an array of drinking games and competitions. You can research potential Hostel's at Hostelworld.com which has 36,000 properties in 170 different countries.

You will be transiting a lot during your travels and some may be much longer than others, during your transit it may be well worth striking up a conversation with a stranger, you never know who you might meet! Friendships have a way of forming when your stuck in the same place for hours.

We highly recommend going on trips, experiences shared are the best ways to meet people and there is a whole spectrum of activities to chose when on your travels. The spectrum can vary from bungee jumping, Skydiving and white water rafting to hiking, kayaking or even horse riding.

Couch surfing is a great way to meet locals, expats and other travelers, most popularly used is couchsurfing.com, the website offers great potential to have a more authentic stay in your destination with hosts that have a good knowledge of the local area. The website also has loads of safety measures and an identity verification process, so you can sleep sound at night without having to worry!

Finally and most importantly we suggest you be yourself and enjoy your travels! Any extra advice or suggestions is always welcome, so feel free to do so in our comment section bellow.
